Maternity Care

The aim of a nurse in after natal care is to ensure that the families experience this period as a joyous occasion. The nurse brings peace and structure in the often happy and pleasant but also hectic and uncertain period after birth. Moreover she ensures that mother and father feel that they are able to look after their baby after the nurse leaves.

The after natal care nurse has the following tasks:

  • Signal and Advice
  • Care for mother and child
  • Checking and observation of physical condition of mother and child
  • Help, instructions and advice for baby and mother care
  • Help, instruction and advice with (breast) feeding

These activities are mainly aimed at prevention. Complications in the first period after birth can be prevented by proper control and counselling of morther and child. The nurse can help the parents with her knowledge and experience in the areas of babycare, the feeding, baby's behaviour et cetera.

Care

The nurse ensures that the household keeps running smoothly. This means that she takes care of a number of household chores, such as:

Laundry and ironing

  • Cleaning bathroom
  • Cleaning bedroom of mother and baby
  • Preparation of meals/cleanliness the kitchen
  • Receiving visitors
  • Looking after flowers/plants
  • Daily shopping

Usually, she does not have the time available for other activities and therefore these do not become her tasks. Normal working hours for the nurse are between 8.00 and 18.00.
